How to Reduce Water Bills in California Homes with Landscaping [2025]

Jun 22, 2025

Interested in reducing your water bill for your California home? Water costs can add up fast, especially for residential properties with large, thirsty lawns. But there's good news: by reimagining your landscape, you can reduce water bills significantly while creating a beautiful, eco-friendly yard that thrives in California's climate.
This guide shows you how to lower water bills through landscaping by replacing traditional lawns with native gardens, drought-tolerant designs, and smart water-saving strategies.

At Water Efficient Gardens, we’ve used our 10+ years of sustainable landscaping expertise and design skills to save Californians nearly 3 million gallons of water. And we’d love to share our knowledge with you, too.

How Can Landscaping Reduce My Water Bill in California?

Conventional lawns often require 40–60 inches of water per year—far more than California's natural rainfall, especially in drought years. According to the California Drought Monitor, much of the state regularly experiences moderate to extreme drought conditions, making water-wise landscaping more essential than ever.
By contrast, a well-designed native landscape can cut outdoor water use by up to 85%, according to California Department of Water Resources (DWR), leading to significant water bill savings.

Smart Landscaping Techniques to Reduce Water Bills at Home

Here are some ways landscaping helps reduce water costs at home include using water-wise gardening techniques like:
      Eliminating lawns (high-water-use turf)
      Installing drip irrigation systems
Designing gardens with water-wise plant groupings (hydrozoning)
Improving soil health to retain moisture
      Using grey water reuse systems

Best Ways to Save Water in the Garden

With water scarcity an ongoing issue, the Save Our Water campaign encourages Californians to embrace water-smart gardening. Here are a few of the most effective techniques to reduce outdoor water use in California while still enjoying a vibrant yard:

1. Replace Lawns With Native Plant Gardens

Native California plants like manzanita, ceanothus, and yarrow are naturally drought-tolerant. They require minimal supplemental watering once established, and they bring vibrant seasonal color and habitat for local wildlife.

This approach supports biodiversity while being one of the most effective ways to reduce water use in home gardens through sustainable designs.
Bonus: Native gardens qualify for rebates through programs like Valley Water Lawn Conversion Rebate and City of Long Beach Lawn-to-Garden Rebate

2. Try Water-Saving Lawn Alternatives

If you love the idea of a “green carpet” look in your California yard but dislike the high water bills, consider:
Drought-tolerant grasses like Carex pansa or Native Bentgrass
No-mow ground covers like Ceanothus or Yerba Buena

These water-saving lawn alternatives reduce irrigation needs while keeping a familiar, low-growing look—especially useful in front yards or park strips.

3. Use Sheet Mulching to Transform Your Lawn (and Reduce Costs)

Sheet mulching is an eco-friendly, cost-effective way to smother existing lawns and build healthy soil in preparation for planting. By layering cardboard, compost, and mulch, you reduce evaporation, suppress weeds, and create a rich foundation for drought-tolerant plants.

It’s one of the easiest ways to start transforming a water-thirsty lawn into a low-maintenance, eco-friendly front yard. Plus, it doesn’t require the additional costs of ripping out grace or harmful pesticides.
We used this exact method in a Hayward garden conversion, where sheet mulching helped kickstart a thriving native landscape—and cut water use significantly.

4. Install a Rain Garden

A rain garden captures runoff from roofs and driveways, allowing it to soak into the ground. This not only reduces your water bill, but also helps prevent stormwater pollution. With smart placement, a rain garden becomes a functional and beautiful way to keep water where your plants need it.

5. Reuse Water With a Greywater System

Greywater systems capture gently used water from sinks, showers, and laundry, and redirect it to irrigate your landscape.
This is a great way to reduce water use in home gardens, especially during dry months when rainfall is scarce. Fruit trees, shrubs, and ornamentals all benefit from consistent greywater irrigation.

6. Design with Both Water and Fire in Mind

In many parts of California, smart landscaping means blending design techniques for water-wise gardening with fire-resistant landscaping.

Smart design choices like gravel pathways, wide plant spacing, and non-flammable groundcovers (like decomposed granite or rock mulch) can help protect your home—while also reducing water use.

Look for drought-tolerant landscaping options that are also firewise—like native sages, monkeyflower, and California fuchsia. These choices contribute to an eco-friendly front yard that’s safer, more sustainable, and tailored to your region.

How Much Water Can Be Saved with Native Landscaping?

Craig's front yard transformation

Craig had a lush green lawn (820 sq ft) in his front yard. His water bill was in the hundreds, and he wanted to cut down the water usage and the bill.  We custom designed a native and rain garden for him, and the installation was done in September 2023.

The result?

  • In 2023, the year the garden was installed, annual water usage dropped by 50% compared to the original level.
  • In 2024—the first full year following the transformation—usage decreased even further, reaching approximately one-third of the original amount, representing a 66% reduction.
  • Looking ahead, 2025 is projected to achieve an additional 25% reduction relative to 2024. This would bring the household’s total water usage down to just 25% of what it was when the front yard was still a lawn.

Jerry's Front and Backyard Transformation.

Jerry, another client and Santa Clara homeowner replaced his traditional front and backyard lawns (totaling 3,800 sq ft) with a custom-designed native and rain garden in late 2020—keeping just a small patch of lawn in the back.

By 2021 (just 1 year later), his household water use dropped by 37%, with 43% less water used in June compared to the previous summer. A beautiful transformation with major water savings!
